WESTBROOK – Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this morning raided a Westbrook home and a restaurant on the Westbrook/Portland line.
Similar raids have been reported at restaurants in Brewer, Waterville and Lewiston.
The raid of the residence, at 100 Bridge St., near the Dana Warp Mill, involved Westbrook police officers as well as federal agents. Agents could be seen talking to a man outside the residence.
Agents also raided Kon, an Asian restaurant on Brighton Avenue in Portland, near I-95 and the Westbrook line.
Officials from ICE referred all questions to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which declined comment at the time. The raid coincided with raids at Super China Buffet in Waterville and Twin City Buffet in Brewer, as well as at a home in Brewer, which have been reported by Current Publishing's media partner, WCSH6 NEWSCENTER, which also reported that a sign at the Brewer restaurant said it is closed today. The Lewiston Sun Journal is reporting an ICE raid at a restaurant in Lewiston, as well.

Chuy's owners released without bond following ICE raid

MESA, Ariz. - A day after more than a dozen Chuy's restaurants were shut down amidst a federal immigration raid, dozens who were lawfully employed by the chain are now out of work.
On Wednesday U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided Chuy's locations in Arizona and California,arresting more than 40 undocumented workers including the restaurants father-son owners, Mark and Christopher Evenson. The chain's accountant, Diane Strehlow, was also taken into custody.
All three appeared in federal court Tuscon on Thursday to face charges ranging from harboring of illegal immigrants to tax evasion. A judge granted them release from jail without bond on the condition they return to court later this month.
Rachel Schooley, of Mesa, worked for Chuy's Mesquite Grill chain for more than eight years and was shocked to learn of the raids and arrests.
"It's just very devastating to me because its more of a home. We were all friends and family, we were there for each other," she said.
Schooley has a 1-year-old daughter and another baby on the way and is now worried about finding a new job. She says neither she nor any of her other co-workers have recieved any official nothttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifice from the restaurant.

Immigration authorities have targeted seven Burger King restaurants in New Castle County for routinely hiring undocumented workers, according to a federal search warrant unsealed this week.
The search warrant, signed Aug. 8, indicates a magistrate judge found probable cause "for evidence of violations of immigration laws by illegal aliens" at seven franchise locations across the county.
Twenty-seven unauthorized workers, 26 from Mexico and one from El Salvador, were arrested
Aug. 13, Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Mike Gilhooly said. Seven men and seven women were detained, while 13 women were released for humanitarian reasons, such as being the sole caregiver for a relative, or health reasons. None of those arrested had a prior criminal record and only one had previously been deported, Gilhooly said, adding no other details about those arrested was available.
A total of 78 employees -- between eight and 18 per location -- suspected of illegally working at the restaurants were identified in the search warrant filed in U.S. District Court in Wilmington.
The investigation is ongoing, Gilhooly said.
All seven restaurants were owned by the same franchise, according to the documents. Investigators targeted the business because it is part of a "high risk industry" for violating employment laws and has been "the subject of prior leads."
According to court papers, a December review of a sample of work papers on file for employees at the franchise revealed 64 percent of the forms had alien registration numbers that had expired, didn't match the employees' names or never were issued by ICE.
Because of the unusually high percentage, more of the franchise's employee forms were checked and more problems were discovered.
