Cedar Rapids, Ia. — A judge will release 24 illegal immigrants held as material witnesses in the federal case against the manager of a former kosher slaughterhouse in Postville.
The former Agriprocessors Inc. employees were to be deported after they served a jail sentence that followed their arrest in an immigration raid in May 2008. But deportation was delayed so they could testify in the trial of former plant manager Sholom Rubashkin.
Rubashkin was convicted of 86 counts of financial fraud, and the immigration charges were dropped. The former workers have been authorized to work, but it's unclear whether they will be deported.
