HAYWARD — Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 10 illegal immigrants — seven men and three women — in raids here Tuesday night, officials confirmed Thursday.

ICE officers with the Fugitive Operations Teams were spotted in the Fairview area Tuesday evening and refused to comment at the time.

"Our teams were responsible for identifying, locating and taking into custody individuals who have ignored court orders of deportation," ICE spokeswoman Virginia Kice said Thursday in a telephone interview.

The arrests were made throughout Hayward, according to Kice, who was unable to provide specific locations.

Immigrants who have not complied with court orders to leave the country are labeled "immigration fugitives" by ICE, a division of the Department of Homeland Security.

Officers arrested seven such individuals Tuesday. The remaining three arrests were of immigrants who weren't being sought, but were in the area of the raids and found to be in the country illegally, Kice said.

Of the 10 taken into custody, eight were Mexican nationals, one was a native of Guatemala and one an immigrant from Nicaragua.

Two of those arrested had prior criminal convictions, Kice said.
